Water quality management is more important in aquarium than anything else. So, do you know how to care for it? I’m sure you are unaware about that. However there are many excellent products available out there to assist in water quality management, but in my opinion, there is still no replacement for water changes, good filtration, and good feeding habits.

However keeping a freshwater aquarium is actually really easy and taking care of fish doesn't require much work at all. The first thing I would recommend if you are novice you should choose a small aquarium, preferably ten gallons or less. In fact it will help you decide if you really like taking care of an aquarium. If you don't have any problems maintaining it then you can replace for bigger one. I’m wrong?

Choose a good spot in your house to place the tank. Make sure that the table you put it on is able to support the weight of the aquarium. Then water comes to change, in fact it should be in more frequent, smaller amounts is preferable.  Make sure the water going in has the right chemistry (PH, ect.) and temperature. If the water is salty, and chlorine or chloramines are present in that water, you can apply the use of a declorinator (sodium diosulfate). Water changes are important for Nitrate removal and buildup of toxic organic and inorganic material.

The next thing you need decide is good filtration, and that is why you may need the filter equipment. However, good filtration consists of biological, chemical, mechanical, and germicidal. The Sponge filters are excellent bio filters perfectly fitted in smaller aquariums. Make sure that Ceramic bio rings are excellent in canister filters for bio filtration. Biological filtration can remove ammonia and nitrite from your water. It will better to use an undergravel filter which is not very expensive and keeps debris out. Another popular type of filter is a hang-on filter. Even you can go for an air pump too. Chemical filtration is achieved by carbon and zeolite but zeolite will be more preferable for freshwater. You can also apply mechanical filtration which can help in removal of debris from the aquarium via filter floss, cartridges etc.

Then temperature is the most vital for your tank. Make sure that the temperature of your tank stays around 80 degrees. If there is not acceptable temperature, you may need to get a heater for the tank. In fact you should not place the heater near the air bubbles. Another thing is that you should not forget to buy a hood and light for your aquarium. The hood will keep the fish in the tank while providing light at the same time.

If you will get not more than four small fish per gallon or not more than two medium fish per gallon, then there will be enough space and they will feel secure and independent. Make sure that the fish you get can be housed together so that you will not have any fish fighting. There are several kinds of fish foods to choose from but flake foods which have too high of a cereal content and the best for your fish. Even you should not overfeed because fish will consume in 2-3 minutes and this can make your tank very dirty. You need to feed your fishes twice a day. Don’t forget to provide quality food that is highly digestible which is very important for less waste.
 
Ok! All these are the basics of starting a freshwater tank. If you will go according to this it will be very easy to maintain your aquarium tank properly. Then you can remember to do water changes, feed the fish and make sure the temperature is perfect for them.
