Follow some rules to prevent your fishes from dying in the aquarium. Give a very small quantity of food to the fish in the first three weeks. Though it is very important to give food because without food there will be no bacterial flora formation. Little food should be given initially and then the quantity should be increased gradually. In order to avoid disturbance to the bacterial flora, avoid washing of gravel and scrubbing of tank wall. Also avoid general cleaning methods like changing the water completely.

Remove dead leaves and other such things from the tank. However remove just enough to maintain an adequate flow through the filter. You may endanger fish life in case you replace the complete filter material. Replacing the dirty part with fresh material can also be dangerous for the fish. Don't throw the sludge at the bottom of the tank away since most of the bacteria live in it.

There are many pet shops which provide a house to house maintenance service for aquariums. Most of them however completely overhaul the aquarium and this may lead to death of the fish. People who have little knowledge about aquariums may actually wash them with detergent! This is bound to kill the fish!

While dealing with the aquarium, we should acquire the nature's method of servicing the fish's natural environment. In nature, a riverbed is never completely repaired. The sand, gravel and bed get cleaned up but are not revamped completely. The water body change partially during floods or heavy rains. So in the same way we should not overhaul the aquarium. Whether it's the professional aquatic pet dealer or the committed aquarist, everyone should adopt the nature's method!
