Aquarium fish health: The cotton: - Mouth disease (Mouth fungus). Cotton Mouth disease is known as Mouth Fungus which is not like a spot disease but highly infectious and contagious. You will found whitish fungus round the cheeks and lips of the fish. When you suspect a fungus in fishes, the Symptoms will be like this Tufts of white, grey, or grey-white material around the mouth region, white or grey patches on the fish's skin. In fact, Mouth Fungus isn't a fungus at all, but a kind of bacterial infection. In this case the lips may become swollen and rot away.
The whole frontal part of the head may be infected and the fish may die with this disease, if proper treatment is given to the fishes. Fishes will lose their appetite and their movements become sluggish with this fungus infection. It would better to kill before this fatal disease attacks the other occupants in the water tank, if you found any symptoms of this disease to your fishes. But if you want to save them and not want to pass on to other occupants, then following treatment is required if possible: You should swab the mouth of the victim fishes with a soft cloth dipped in strong salt solution. Then keep the patreat isolated in a bucket or jar containing strong salt water. - Try swabbing the lips with a 5 per cent silver mercury preparation. - Make a solution of Terramycin or Aureomycuin by dissolving 50mg per gallon of water, a rapid cure is expected within 48 hours. In fact the Methylene blue solution is most common remedy which became popular. Infected fishes should be placed in a jar, bucket or a treatment tank in which you can add a methylene per blue to colour the water deep blue to perform this remedy.
