There are so many things that you need to keep in mind in order to avoid continuous fish death. To have a perfect set up for your aquarium, follow some basic rules:

1. Before you busy the fish, make sure that it will be compatible with the other species of the fish in the aquarium. Check if it is a territorial, community or cannibalistic species? This is a very important thing which you must check before you buy it.

2. Make sure that the fish you buy is healthy and active. It should be behaving normally and swimming properly.

3. Observe the fish carefully before you buy it. This will help you in assessing its behavior. Give the fish a wide berth, if it has clamped fins, ragged fins or markings along its flanks.

4. If you observe that the fish likes to stay away from the group, don't buy it.

5. If a tank has high rate of fatalities, avoid buying a fish from it.

6. See if the new fish will be able to adapt itself to the water of your tank.

7. Ask about the history of the fish before you buy it.

8. Avoid buying an off color or sick fish. This will prevent entry of diseases into your aquarium.

After you choose a fish, locate an appropriate place to set up your aquarium! Choosing a fish will become a lot easier if you keep these points in your mind while buying it!
